First, this is not a book that anyone except the author and his proofreaders will read all the way through. However, any entry you DO read is likely to be well-written and intriguing. This is not a list of 1,000 “best books” or even books you “must” read. It is 1,000 books (and more, in various lists) that the author has read during his life and which he would include if he owned a bookshop that could only contain 1,000 books. He also intended it to be a list for a lifetime, so it includes many children’s books and books aimed at young adults. Many you will have read, most you will at least have heard of. But every few pages there is a gem of a suggestion that I have never heard of but which sounds interesting. Just what a librarian needs – even more books to desire. The essays for each one are polished jewels that make you want to head for the library or bookstore (physically or electronically). More interesting than other books of this type.
