Make no mistake, this is far from a traditional biopic, more a feverish fantasia from the overheated imagination of Ken Russell, the madman of British cinema. Richard Chamberlain plays Tchaikovsky and Glenda Jackson (who goes the full monty) plays his unhappy wife. Over the top, flamboyant and slightly insane, "The Music Lovers" is always interesting and visually striking, but not very enjoyable, particularly the final scenes of Jackson in a madhouse. Russell also made films about Mahler, Liszt and The Who.
