1960s London is beautifully evoked in this story of a family enduring a crisis of great magnitude and peril. The background is the Cold War, and a recovering Britain exhibits the paranoia and ultimate scapegoating that set this novel on it's course. The characters are fully realized. If you are looking for a thriller that doesn't involve car chases, explosives and superhuman feats, look no further. The parallels to our own suspicion of "the other" today make this book even more worthwhile.
