Ollie and Moritz are reluctant pen pals encouraged to write to each other because they are around the same age and both have unusual disabilities. Ollie is an American living in seclusion because he is allergic to electricity. Moritz was born in Germany with no eyes, but has incredible echolocation skills. If they ever met the amount of electricity in Moritz’s heart monitor could kill Ollie. The knowledge that they can never meet makes them confide in each other in their letters. As Moritz and Ollie connect with each other, they both begin to ask questions about the causes and limitations of their rare disabilities. This is such a strange and fascinating concept for a book, but the relationship between Ollie and Moritz makes it seem realistic even though it isn’t.
