Wes Anderson has lately, quickly, become my favourite director, but to be honest this movie wasn’t his best work. Don’t get me wrong -- I still really like it, but parts of it felt very odd and a little off-kilter. The chosen font, for example, felt like it wasn’t at all what it was trying to be. A few scenes felt that way too… like they were trying to be something and didn’t succeed. There was one scene closer to the end with a lot of lightning, and it felt like it was some kind of cheap rip-off. The lighting of the scene was terrible, to be honest. Maybe these things did live up to Anderson’s expectations, and for some reason I just don’t see it… but I, the audience, am who it’s supposed to appeal to anyway. However, with these faults, there are the better things (which are mostly to be expected from Wes Anderson) like the adult-like children, childlike adults, the adorable love story and the (mostly) pleasing visuals. If you look past the awkwardness and the few displeasing scenes, the story was entirely cute and pleasant and I find myself wishing I could live in their world. 4/5 stars @aCardboardBox of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board
