Ian McKellen as Sherlock Holmes? Seems like a perfect match. And McKellen is good as usual, having fun with the role. Unfortunately the movie around him falls short of the mark. Despite some clever additions - keep your eyes peeled for a cameo by Nicholas Rowe, star of 1985's Young Sherlock Holmes - this film is a dull, plodding slog that promises thrilling twists and turns but never delivers them. It's more about the horrors of dementia than anything else. If you're looking for major revelations or new insights into the character, there aren't many. Worth noting: This film is not based on the Conan Doyle stories, but is rather a "reimagining" of the Sherlock Holmes mythology, inspired by a novel written by another author.
