Art:21. Season Four

Art in the Twenty-first Century

A fascinating look at art and artists in the early 21st century. Topics range from painting and photography to sculpture and installations. Each artist’s work is showcased, and the artist is interviewed – though the interviewer is never present in the video; the artist seems to be making entirely personal statements about his/her work. My particular favorites were Pierre Huyge’s “island” installation (music by Xenakis!); Ursula von Rydingsvard’s massive, rough-hewn wooden sculptures; and Robert Ryman’s “blank” canvasses that depend entirely on their environment and lighting (he also has a humorous way of talking about his work, seemingly at odds with the work itself) – but that is merely my opinion and anyone interested at all in art can probably find something here to their liking. The introduction to each artist, a running white line on a colored background with descriptive words interposed, is in itself something of a video art piece. I picked this up more or less at random, but I’ve ordered all of the other seasons.
