I liked this book for so many reasons: talented writing, rich character development, the historical descriptions of the social life, architecture, medicine, religion of the middle ages, and the themes of endurance and following your dreams. But at the risk of sounding like a prude, I was not comfortable with the amount of sexual material. Included were the language and imagery of playful and passionate romance, sex for sale, violent rape, and glimpses into same-sex encounters. The descriptions of medieval torture/punishments made my skin crawl. Still I was drawn back to the story until the end! Perhaps this would be considered a success for the author to have written so vividly that the reader has a range of emotional response. Perhaps, because it was an audio book, I was uncomfortable broadcasting sexual scenes aloud. Still, does adult reading have to equate with titillation? In fairness, I read another of his books, but have come to the same conclusion. I will look for a different author.
