This is probably a charming book to read, but it is an absolutely first-rate audiobook. The narrator is brilliant, from her first howls, issuing mysteriously from the barn - certainly some wounded animal must be in there! - to the varied accents of the characters that announce their place on the social ladder and suggest their innermost motivations. And the book has a huge heart, plenty of tidbits to delight older children like my 11- & 13-year-old sons, and a great deal of humor. We are all completely enamored of brave governess Penelope, the three semi-civilized children who are doing their best not to consume small rodents as snacks, and even poor, manic, half-deranged Lady Ashton. We are well into book two now and are enjoying the heck out of it as well. Owoooh!
