This movie is based on true story that took place in one of the California’s high schools, about a basketball team and a coach who puts academics before sports. This is an extraordinary movie that conveys a very strong message with it. It could be used for educational, motivational, and personal purposes. The movie is about a basketball team who constantly loses and kids who have no aim or direction in life, a former basketball player and a sports good store owner takes up the job to coach the team. His techniques of teaching the kids discipline and respect are extremely remarkable and intelligent. He makes a great contribution into the team and helps them regain hope by winning games. However the coach’s goals aren’t just the wins in the game, he wants the kids to succeed and make something out of their lives, so he finds ways to encourage them to leave their bad choices behind and begin making new good ones that would allow the kids to have a secure future. The movie is setting a bar that contradicts the theory that success for young black males only lies in the field of entertainment as rappers or as sports players, that they can’t be sitting in a high school class and be learning anything to be successful in life. The movie and the characters cover topics such as, drugs, sex, murder, vandalism, success, responsibility, poverty, hunger, and discipline in areas that have higher rates of crimes due to these problems. This book could be a great family movie to watch and reflect on what we have available and take good advantage of it, or it could be used in a classroom to send out a strong message that education is important and without education, there is never a lifelong success that will last like knowledge does.
