The Incredible True Story of A Navy Nurse POW in the Occupied Philippines

Book - 2019
Rate this:
Navy nurse Dorothy Still's first year at a military hospital in the Philippines was an adventure, dating sailors and attending dances. Days after Pearl Harbor was attacked, the Japanese military assaulted the Philippines. Manila fell to Japan in early January 1942. Still was held captive in a hospital and then transferred to a civilian prison camp. The navy nurses worked in a makeshift hospital where cramped conditions, disease, and poor nutrition meant they were overwhelmed. In May 1943 a civilian physician requested the navy nurses transfer to a new prison camp in the countryside. They turned a stripped infirmary into a functioning hospital, with nonstop care for starving, diseased, and abused inmates. This is the story of their fight for life during a dark time. -- adapted from jacket
