Brazen, a completely unique graphic novel by Penelope Bagieu, contains the biographies of 30 extraordinary women. They are completely independent of each other– they hail from all corners of the world and span each period of human history – except for the fact that their achievements have remained obscure. (Only a very few could be described as famous, among them Josephine Baker, Mae Jemison, and Margaret Hamilton). This graphic novel serves not only as a clever collection of beautiful illustrations, but also as an educational tool to learn about the trailblazer's history has forgotten.
Bagieu's illustrations are wonderful, and really help bring these amazing stories to life. They are simplistic and do not feel overproduced, so they don't distract from the actual story. There is a definite pattern that helps each story to flow seamlessly and makes the book very easy to read.
Bagieu herself says this about Brazen: “This book is by no means a thorough scholarly work; rather, it’s one woman’s tribute — my homage to the full, daring lives they lead, often against great odds.” And in my opinion, this homage is fitting of the marvelous women who fill the pages. I can only hope she has more volumes to give us down the road!

ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! Illustration is great and it's not the same old stories about the same old women over and over again... diverse, comedic, and impactful!

First graphic novel I read. As a senior citizen didn't think this genre was for me. However, it was a short and easy to read; historically informative; humorous. I have recommended this many times as reference material and/ or means of starting research into women' history. Several that I recommended this read to have thanked me. Enjoyable for young adults and adult readers.

Why did I not know ALL these EXTRAORDINARY, adventuresome, amazing women?!?
These women should be CENTRAL to history.
This is my first graphic novel and it is all I hoped and more. If there are more like this, it will not be my last.
This is engaging, varied, well-illustrated and FUN to read! The contributions ao these unknown females confounds me.
