MM plays a real looser in this flick. He has been in much better movies.Too much science fiction wrapped up in this plot.

I'm not a MM fan, mainly because so many of the characters he plays seem the same: grubby-looking, hard-drinking, dull bedroom scenes, chain-smoking, mumbling, squinting, stumbling around, and wearing crispy-dirty clothing. Which perfectly describes his character in Serenity.
Anne Hathaway looks different as a blonde, but plays a character that seems stunted and flat, much like Diane Lane's (minor) character, and other characters. I thought these actors deserved better, but what's done is done. Although enough already with the constant chain smoking! And see my trigger warnings below.
Much of the scenery is beautiful, the story is different, but the ending is... surreal.
If you don't mind surreal, give this film a view.
I watched it because the trailer looked good. And because I kinda wanted to see how it ended, even though I didn't like it and won't watch it again.
A grubby-looking, chain-smoking guy (guess who!) is drifting through life as the captain of a small tourist-fishing boat, when one evening a mysterious blonde shows up and makes him an offer (which is in the film trailers): take her husband out fishing, and feed him to the sharks.
Why? Does he do it? What stands in his way? Why did the blonde track him down? Watch the film and find out.
Trigger warnings:
Heavy tobacco use, "domestic" violence (spousal abuse, child abuse), drunk driving, and references to using young (10 year-old) girls for ***ual gratification.
I agree with one reviewer who wrote the best thing about this film was the kitty cat.

Rut ro. Back to my theory on Directed, written, and produced by Steven Knight. Generally doesn’t add up to be that involved in a film. And, once again, Serenity is proof of that. I’m getting tired of Matthew McConaughey’s gruff, weird, doesn’t care and rarely bathes persona. It didn’t make sense, and I sat there waiting thinking it might. Oh well. My bad.

I wondered why all the characters were so stereotypical; then the ending came. Oddly disturbing.

Combine a so-so Twilight Zone episode, The Matrix, Moby Dick and Double Indemnity and you might get this movie,

Photographic work A +, Story line D+. Cheaper than those 30 cents mysteries in 60s. So thin and preditable. Poor Anne Hathaway.

This movie is very bad, but it's very bad in a lot of entertaining ways.
