Having read Winton, Shute, Corris (including his autobiography as a teenage diabetic), Carrey, Moriarty, London, and others...I was interested in Hillman's 2nd book, because finding a new Aussie writer is always good! This book, set in 1968 with flashbacks to 1945, reminded me most of Shute's "A Town Like Alice" in that the main characters are well written and the "hook" of the small town residents reaction to a newbie plays well into the development, romance, and healing. No spoilers here...but he takes on all difficult subjects: biological parenting vs nurturing parenting; cult religions; May-October love and marriage; and even has the good-hearted main character perhaps either shy or a bit socially dysfunctional. Worth a read and good for book clubs because it also includes an Auchwitz survivor as a main character.

I'm of two minds here as the characters were extremely well drawn and compelling, but I don't know if I bought the resolution of the final crisis. Seemed a little pat. So it's worth reading if you only like a bit of drama, but if you wish for more adventure, this is not the read for you right now.

It seemed to take a long time to get to the meat of 'The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted', with little clue as to where it was going, BUT the title absolutely captures the theme.

'The Bookshop of the Broken Hearted' is about surviving unimaginable heartbreak, fear of it happening again and finding courage in love, courage to love, courage to be where you should. It is exceptionally well written with honest descriptions of people, emotions and places, sometime beautiful, sometimes realistically awful and yes, sometimes heartbreaking.

Although there was some unfamiliar Australian jargon to interpret, I read this book straight though. The hero is such a good and gentle person that one can only wish him good things.
