This story about a drug addicted son who unexpectedly arrives home at Christmastime is not a fun happy Christmas movie, but I thought it was a powerful and heartbreaking film about the havoc and destruction that drugs can cause, not just for the addict themselves but also for their families. I thought Julia Roberts was outstanding as the desperate and anxious mother who would do anything to save her troubled son. I also thought Lucas Hedges was outstanding as her addicted son. I really liked that the movie didn't just try to put simple labels on things. Lucas Hedge's character had done some terrible things, but he wasn't a terrible person, he was just very troubled and confused. Julia Roberts' character didn't always make the wisest decisions, but she was trying to do her best and she just wasn't sure what the right thing to do was. So not a fun movie, but I thought it was very good.

I can only give it a half star because I cannot support the choice the mother made. Julia does a great job with her role as usual, but I can't deal with a parent who throws her entire family away to save one child who does not want saving and puts his family in danger. The mother was causing trauma to her other three children and her husband by enabling her drug addicted son. Let the son go and please go take care of and fully enjoy your family members who are choosing life.

I didnt really like this movie. Not enough content. I prefer the movie Beautiful Boy with Steve Carell, which is based on a true story.

Powerful film. It demonstrates the power of addiction and the lengths a mother will go to save a child. I cannot help thinking about the other 3 children in the story and how much they also need their mother. Kristi & Abby Tabby

This is a copy of Beautiful Boy a movie based on a true story. I always enjoy Julia Roberts, I just don't understand why this movie is a copy.

I found the start of the movie to just jump into the story. Therefore, at the start of the movie I just could not get into the story. As the movie goes on you do discover who the characters are and what is going on. I was not overly impressed by the movie. The ending however was unexpected. You also cannot help to feel sorry for Ben as his problems you find out later was caused by his doctor. For me I just could not get into the movie.

Julia Roberts is excellent in a film exploring drug addiction. A very realistic vision of the tragedy that addicts and their loved ones endure. It has been a while since viewing Roberts, but she does some real acting in this film.

I think this is an excellent movie that depicts the struggle of addiction on the addict, the family and others who are involved with the person. It is a pretty accurate account of the fear of the people who love you and want to trust you and the fear within. It is really a daily struggle because it only takes being in the wrong place to fall back into addiction even when you try your hardest. The cast was excellent in this movie. Unconditional love is shown.
