The film may have been inspired by "true events", but the only facts in the film were that Margaret and Elizabeth were allowed to mingle with the crowds on VE night. Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret asked the King and Queen if they could join the victory party. After some cajoling, their parents agreed, but not before assembling a 16-strong group of trusted members of the royal household, including Margaret Rhodes, the Queen’s cousin, who was living at Buckingham Palace at the time, Lord Porchester, later the Queen’s racing manager, and the King’s equerry, Peter Townsend, an RAF war hero, later to fall in love with Princess Margaret. The royal party slipped out of the palace, Princess Elizabeth in the uniform of the Auxiliary Territorial Service, with whom she had served as a mechanic, and Princess Margaret in glamorous civvies. Margaret Rhodes: “We crossed the forecourt at Buckingham Palace and got to the railings and there were these masses and masses of people. There was a general thing of, 'We want the King and Queen’, which we all frantically joined in with and were amazed when, five or 10 minutes later, the windows opened and they came out on to the balcony. It was like a wonderful escape for the girls. I don’t think they’d ever been out among millions of people. It was just freedom – to be an ordinary person.” No brothels - no mickey finns. What a horrible waste of film!! Kristi & Abby Tabby

Not much to be said about this film as it was very contrived and unbelievable. It didn't help that the actress portraying Elizabeth was just damn annoying. I ended up fast forwarding to most of the movie and I was sooo happy when I reached the end.

As a lover of royal dramatizations I had high hopes for this movie, but it truly disappointed. Inspired by true events, but with a lot of dramatic poetic license, the story was too light. The characters were not likable or even somewhat believable. Neither princess looked remotely like the real princesses -especially poor Margaret. Having really enjoyed the recent royal dramatization in "The Crown", this one seemed rather amateurish and silly.

An entertainment based on an historical rumour. The film is well enough done, but it does not aspire to the classic status of a "Roman Holiday" with Gregory Peck and Princess Audrey Hepburn.

Here the characterizations of the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret of Buckingham Palace seem to be modelled rather closely after those of sisters Elizabeth and Lydia Bennet of Longbourn.

I really enjoyed this film. It was much better than I expected. Sweet story, solid performances and great cinematography.

I actually really enjoyed this film! It is silly and witty, while also very thoughtful. Kind of has a little bit of everything. Definitely showed a side of the royal family that you very rarely hear about.

A delightful take on the What if?.... and an entirely believable 'Babes in the wood' presentation. Well cast and very funny at times with the Laurel and Hardy antics of the 2 military' chaperones'. A pleasant evening's viewing.

This one surprised me..pleasantly. It was funny. The characters endearing. And the plot was rather unique. It fits nicely for a couple hours of light viewing.

Lillibet... No one must ever know about this. You spent last night at the Ritz.
===
How much?
-Seven pounds, eleven and fourpence, please.
Well, we... Don't keep much here, but I'll, er, have a whip-round amongst the footmen.
===
She's a costermonger.
Soho?
-An interesting place. Dead horses, this strange smoke that everyone was just wild for... By the way, what's a knocking shop?
===
Just another girl in the crowd. Without everyone bowing and curtseying.

It's VE night. All sorts of unusual things are happening. I feel certain an exception will be made.
