A German army deserter finds an abandoned Nazi captain's uniform in the final weeks of World War II. Emboldened by the authority the uniform grants him, he amasses a band of stragglers who cede to his command despite the suspicions of some. Citing direct orders from the Fuhrer himself, he soon takes command of a camp holding German soldiers accused of desertion and begins to dispense harsh justice.

Another aspect of Nazi Germany that should not be forgotten or discounted. There is evil in this world and it is shown again herein.

Good performances, but not for viewers looking for a happy ending.
According to the director, this is actually based on a true story.

After years in the wilderness, Robert Schwentke comes up with a good-un. Effectively, he transplants Alfred Jarry's absurdist play "Ubu Roi" to the chaos near the end of WW II.
The grainy black and white cinematography and the clever ending (as the credits roll) show that Schwentke has some life left in him. Hopefully he will continue his winning streak.

Terribly violent. There are no heroes in this film. I felt angry at the the movie until the watched the Q & A with the director. When I understood what he was attempting to do with the film, I felt better about being subjected to the violence. Kristi & Abby Tabby

Understood the motives for making this film, blind allegiance of the German people during the time of World War II, but hard to stomach the rawness of the material and scenes of beatings and carnage, even against Nazi deserters. Based on an actual case, but took some patience to view.
