This is not a nutcracker ballet movie. It is a fantasy story very loosely and I do mean loosely related to the nutcracker theme. If you are expecting it to be a nutcracker musical you will be very disappointed. If you watch it as a fantasy movie and try to enjoy it for what it is, you may be pleasantly surprised. It is a feel good family movie with a very simplistic plot that seems to be written for children and those adults that enjoy some entertainment of a far simpler time.

I don't understand all the negativity that was heaped on this film. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. First, the story is not the traditional Nutcracker story. It is based on another story completely but I think this led to disappointment for many people because it wasn't what they expected. For me, I just enjoyed a story I didn't already know. The movie is just beautiful to watch. The costumes and sets are just gorgeous and they alone really elevated the movie for me. I also thought Mackenzie Foy was very compelling and appealing as the lead in this. I also thought her character was very brave, capable and strong and I like movies with strong female leads. The storyline itself was kind of odd and there were some head-scratching bits, I agree. The dialogue was clunky sometimes. But overall I thought it was a fun fantasy-adventure and I enjoyed it for what it was.

Visually stunning, with a great cast, but a very boring story with no chemistry between the characters. The only interesting things were the Mouse King, the mid-film ballet segment and the ballet/modern dance featured during the closing credits. Pre-schoolers might enjoy the colour and costumes, but anybody over 8 years old would be bored stiff. It was a complete waste of a stellar cast.

Disappointing. Not very much to do with the original Nutcracker. This is more like Clara in Wonderland. Creative colorful sets and beautiful costumes but the acting is so so and the plot is only fair. But it is not going to offend anyone and is suitable for children or adults.

Visually lavish and cast with good actors, this film fails due to poor execution of the story line. I just couldn't quite get into it. The acting by Keira Knightley was over-the-top too. And if you want to go for the visual only you will need the blu-ray version to get the full benefit.

I liked the movie. The costumes, scenery, simply incredible. And for us, it was an excellent introduction to the American Ballet Theater's first African-American prima ballerina, Misty Copeland. And it was my introduction to Jayden Fowora-Knight, a great addition to the talented young African-American male actors we've been seeing lately. The movie also has Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren in it- how can anyone skip out on a movie with both of those fabulous actors?

I don't feel as harshly about this film as a lot of other people do, although I do agree with a lot of their complaints- characters that don't connect and don't have the depth you're hoping for and a script that doesn't have the strength it could have had (and we wish it'd had).
I'm not such a fanatic about Disney as to believe that they don't make mistakes, and they made quite a few with this one, most especially not living up to its potential.
However, this will probably still make it into my library because it is a cute show. As far as a lot of Christmas movies go, it's a lot better than a lot of others I've seen (which of course is not a reason for a good rating, but let's allow it to be viewed and compared in its genre).
The visuals are spectacular. The music is beautiful (which it should be considering its source and inspiration). And, again, the story is basically a cute, fun concept.

Synopsis from the back of the DVD-
From the studio that brought you "Beauty and the Beast" comes the reimagined tale of "The Nutcracker." When Clara's mother leaves her a mysterious gift, she embarks on a journey to 4 secret realms- where she discovers her greatest strength could change the world.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, I found, was incredibly disappointing as it lacked a good story and plot line. I knew that the reviews were not very positive about the film though I was hoping that they weren’t giving the film justice; however, it was a complete let down. I enjoyed the concept of the story though I felt that it was not executed well. The idea for the plot twist being “one of the good guys becomes the bad guy” was interesting, but the villain was taken down so easily. The film alluded to the idea that there would be a huge war and much more action when it came to the battle between the protagonist and antagonist, but it was incredibly boring. I also felt that I had no idea what the story even was at the beginning of the film. It felt rushed towards the end, and the storyline seemed very stereotypical and predictable. I will say, however, that the CGI was incredible. The props, sets, and costumes were absolutely gorgeous with so much attention to detail and colour, and they were really well done to convey the idea of a magical, whimsical, fairytale setting. The dancing was also marvelous, and it was beautiful to watch Misty Copeland perform a ballet to include the element of the beloved The Nutcracker ballet. These elements somewhat made up for the poor film, and I admit that I enjoyed watching them though I would say the film is not worth watching. 2/5 stars. @demigod.on.a.mission of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I was under the impression the Nutcracker and the Four Realms was going to be a really good movie. The first 30 minutes was so interesting. Even the costumes and the beautiful design was spectacular. I thought it was going to be one of Disney’s winners. But Disney failed to cast their magic and its plotline took a terrible twist and changed within a few minutes once she entered the realms. The female lead was nothing to brag about and the plotline was way too predictable. The nutcracker was so weak and failed to meet the requirements of his character due to his lack of chemistry with the hero and his dialogue was practically nothing more than follow the hero around. It was almost identical to Alice in Wonderland. It shares the same title of the Russian play and ballet the Nutcracker. I barely heard any music from the nutcracker. I am very disappointed by Disney. They had such an opportunity to make an amazing movie out of a holiday classic that could have been watched every Christmas season for years to come! What a shame! It is just not worth it. 1/5 Stars. @janmarrow1225 of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board

It's a Lassie Halstrom movie! Combine his unique talent for making movies with heart and beauty with the visual feast of Disney's magic machine and you have this movie.
While I would agree that it is a bit plot thin, it subtly combines the themes of The Nutcracker with coming of age empowerment. It's not predictable and not scary in the way that it might be portrayed. It's an intelligent adventure story. I think it would be a good family film with tweens. Make sure not to miss the ballet at the end, just after the credits. First time I've ever seen hiphop ballet.

It's unusual for Disney to have a misfire, much less two in a single year (or three, if you count Solo). But like A Wrinkle in Time, and also despite very attractive actors, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms suffers from a distinct lack of chemistry. On the other hand, as always for Disney, the film is loaded with gorgeous eye candy.
