When your life is a lie, the truth can kill you. When her fiancé’s private plane crashes in the Colorado Rockies, Allison Carpenter miraculously survives. But the fight for her life is just beginning. Allison has been living with a terrible secret, a shocking truth that powerful men will kill to keep buried. If they know she’s alive, they will come for her. She must make it home. In the small community of Owl Creek, Maine, Maggie Carpenter learns that her only child is presumed dead. But authorities have not recovered her body—giving Maggie a shred of hope. She, too, harbors a shameful secret: she hasn’t communicated with her daughter in two years, since a family tragedy drove Allison away. Maggie doesn’t know anything about her daughter’s life now—not even that she was engaged to wealthy pharmaceutical CEO Ben Gardner, or why she was on a private plane. As Allison struggles across the treacherous mountain wilderness, Maggie embarks on a desperate search for answers. Immersing herself in Allison’s life, she discovers a sleek socialite hiding dark secrets. What was Allison running from—and can Maggie uncover the truth in time to save her?

Would she drink a bottle of whiskey when she did?
Could the car she bought go 110 mph without blowing up?
Would a trucker not allow her to pass?
The ending . . . predictable.

Prose is pedestrian.

Okay for a quick read, though I skipped many paragraphs.

There are tighter mysteries, thrillers.

Simple, boring prose. I couldn't get past page 80. Nothing was happening.

Told from alternating narratives, this fast paced novel was a perfect snow day listen. A story of survival, as well as a reflection on a complicated relationship between an estranged mother and daughter. The story was predictable, no surprises here, but it was fast, easy, and enjoyable; perfect brain candy for a monotonous day.

Poorly written and smutty

A New & Noteworthy pick. Allison barely survives the plane crash in the Colorado Rockies that kills her fiancé. And things only get worse from there. A propulsive and tantalizing storyline.

A tale of survival - in the mountains and in life...

Allison was onboard her fiance’s plane when it suddenly crashed into the mountains. Somehow she survived, and she immediately goes into survival mode. But is there more than just the wilderness waiting to kill her? Could it be that the secrets she has recently learned are enough to kill her as well? If she can just get to safety, maybe it will be fine...maybe...

Across the country, Maggie hears the news of her daughter’s plane crash. Still reeling from the death of her husband two years earlier, Maggie plunges into a deep well of grief. Clinging to the detail that Allison’s body was not found, Maggie allows herself to hope...and therefore starts to obsessively research details of her estranged daughter’s life. But what she finds does not make things more fact, things are more complicated than they have ever been.

Pros: A really great start to this one...Allison’s challenges/history and Maggie’s determination were offset in precise, well written chapters.

Cons: Parts of this novel were great, I couldn’t turn the pages quickly enough. But unfortunately other parts seemed to drag and become repetitive.

I feel badly because I really liked this book at the beginning...but the second half made it a bit less enjoyable for me. Still a super fun, easy read that most people would like, but maybe not love.

Really enjoyed this book. Alternating chapters between the two main characters (mother & daughter), a survival story, criminal activity, suspense, and so much more. I am a busy working mother but I read the last half of the book within 3 days which is very quick for me!

Well, survivor stories are my favorite so as soon as I saw this was about a woman surviving a plane crash in the Rockies and then setting off on foot to outrun the bad guys I knew it was my kind of book. As the woman struggles to survive, across the country her mother believing her daughter is dead is trying to unravel the mystery of her daughter’s life over the last 2 years. A review on the back of the book summed it up nicely: a page turner with dueling mother daughter narrators whom you will root for and empathize with as they struggle to survive their harrowing present, come to terms with a troubled past, and fight to find their way home. A good mystery/thriller - I enjoyed it.
