Filled with all stars like Gweneth Paltrow, Ewan MacGregor and Jeremy Northam, it definitely had glitzy costumes and glamour....but perhaps Emma comes off looking rather like an airhead in this one versus a bright self confident girl who is just vain.

One of my favorite movies. It follows pretty closely to the book (adding a few lines said by Mr. Knightley that are the sweetest).

I am not a huge fan of Goop founder, Gwyneth Paltrow, but I have to admit she is absolutely perfect in this film's title role. It's a beautiful adaptation of the Jane Austen novel that any of her afficiandos will thoroughly enjoy.

As a lover of all Jane Austen's novels who enjoys many of the movie adaptations, I just couldn't like this one. The cast is overall very good, especially Alan Cumming as the smarmy Mr Elton and Toni Collette as Harriet, and the Bates mother and daughter are hilarious. The film is obviously big budget and has some beautiful outdoor scenes and great set design. But the story is presented as a light romantic comedy, with the painful and tragic parts glossed over - something all too common from screenwriters who don't understand Austen or can't take her seriously. The acting is deliberately cartoonish, and even the genuine personal crises come across as fluff. The made for TV versions may not be perfect, but I think they capture Austen's characters and story much better.

Everything is wrong with this 1996 Miramax Films version and it's possible to enjoy any of the other 3 film versions offered at the VPL. I believe a grave mistake was made in casting and the artistic presentation seemed out of step. I even tried to imagine the talented Gwyneth Paltrow (enjoy her role in "A Perfect Murder" instead) playing "Harriet" and the brilliant Toni Collette playing "Emma". I found no redeeming features in the filming, script or attitude of this misguided inferior movie version. All other VPL film versions castings are more true to the book.

Readers might enjoy these VPL books - (1) "Emma An Annotated Version" edited by Bharat Tandon (2) "Jane Austen at Home" by Lucy Worsley (3) "What Matters in Jane Austen? 20 Crucial Puzzles Solved" by John Mullan.

The 1996 film, 'Emma', starring Gwyneth Paltrow, is a beautiful portrayal of Jane Austen's book. The story follows Emma as she tries successfully (and unsuccessfully) match-making her friends together and the trouble she gets herself into as a result. The acting is wonderfully done and the film brings about several laughs without being a comedy. It is a slower movie than other film adaptations of Jane Austen's novels. Despite this flaw, it is an enjoyable watch. I'll give it a 3 out of 5.

It was one of the best movies I have seen in a while. No language, sex, or violence. Recommended. Well worth your time.

Good movie! Boys seem to not really like it though. My brother runs to his room when he hears we are going to watch it! LOL!

This is the best movie version of "Emma" I have seen. Great period piece to escape for a couple of hours. Beautifully designed costumes and sets--gives you a real feel for an elegance of another time. I highly recommend this movie.
