A story of the compromises and risks run by illegal immigrants (in one case a wife murderer) in their effort to get on in London. The film has a rather predictable plot twist near the end, and the ending itself is syrupy sentimentality (the two main characters on other sides of an airport saying 'I love you' to each other in a whisper). The first half is rather exciting - the writing gives enough hints to indicate that something unusual is going on and reveals bits of the characters in a way that gets the viewers interested in them. The choice of Tatou as one of the main characters was perhaps an error because of her extraordinary photogeniety.

There are bad "bad" movies and there are good "bad" movies.
Dirty Pretty Things has two counts against it from the get-go.
1. It's directed by Stephen Frears (he of My Beautiful Laundrette, one of the worst movies of all time.) Stevie also never, never, never misses a chance to "schlock it up".
2. It is/was praised by Cisco & Egbert - two of the most over-rated reviewers in the history of film reviewing.
So, what is it? Good "bad" or Bad ''bad"? Hint: Run it through the schlock indicator.

Suggestion: Toss all Frears movies in the dumpster and take out ones by the Dardennes or Sean Baker.

An excellent movie, like a fairy tale in the real world. We certainly need more people like Okwe and if not, at least more movies like this.

Chiwetal Ejiofor, Audrey Tautou, and Sophie Okonedo play undocumented workers in the UK who are forced to do very unsavory things by their employers in order to evade the immigration authorities. This film was made years before it was revealed that a famous NYC real estate developer exploited his undocumented workers while positing that America's problem was the very bad immigrants.

The horrors these characters face in England, and their willingness to suffer such pain and humiliation, forces the viewer (well, except comment by Gerri who is such a White American she/he has no clue to world reality) to consider how truly bad the world can be outside the privileged "first world." If you found this movie thought provoking, try "Sold" and "Desierto" for similar suffering--both of these should be watched with a friend who will discuss them with you.

Excellent movie, shows us how unfortunate humanity is treated by those in an over powering positions. How the strong prey on the weak, specially those illegally in the country. Basically what comes around goes around. Those with good moral Character do not change despite unusual situations, they still remember their morals, irrespective of religion. Perhaps not for young children as some of the scenes have gory pictures. But enjoyed everything including the struggle immigrants make to reach their dreams, and change their lives.

Excellent, gritty urban flick with a very slick plot. All about how desperate immigrants can be to stay in the west--no matter how vile we are or the toll that is exacted for such passage. Solid acting all around, and an interesting, believable cast in a highly unusual story. ****½

This film by UK director Stephen Frears is about illegal immigrants in London, an underground human organ trade, and the delivery of rightful punishment to a bad guy in the end. Some disjoints here and there, but still a worthwhile film to watch.

This is an excellent movie. Commenter Gerri obviously has no idea that some other countries are so bad and their future so hopeless in them that this is what people would endure to leave and live in another. As a counselor once said to me, " kids are living on the street because in spite of how bad it is out there it's still better than living at home."
Steven Knight, who wrote this screenplay also wrote Eastern Promises and you can see the similarities between the two films. Chiwetel Ejiofor is intelligent actor who pulls you in and holds you right there throughout this film. He really knocks it out of the park in this wonderful little sleeper of movie!

One wonders,,,
1. Why would a young pretty Turkish women choose to be raped MULTIPLE TIMES, to stay in England?
2. Why would any one sell his kidney to stay in England?
3. Is England really worthy of being raped & losing a kidney?

It looks as if, the ENGLISH desperately trying to hold on to their empty prestige, their falling empire can NOT deliver, they are ONLY left with making SADISTIC movies for pleasure, disguised as entertainment, to degrade ALL human breed.

This movie is an insult to every DECENT man kind.
