This is actually one of my favorite graphic novels. It’s funny, irreverent, and puts a whole new spin on the fantasy Good vs Evil genre. The art is adorable and there are several just truly breath-taking, emotional scenes that’ll make you sniffle. Such an amazing book.

Funny, mildly touching, and great storytelling overall.

Noelle Stevenson is known in my household as the writer/creator of Lumberjanes and the creator/show-runner of the new She-Ra series on Netflix, although we were not aware of her involvement with the latter until well after show viewing. Nimona predates both of these, created at Stevenson's ripe old age of her early 20's. It shows off Stevenson's storytelling prowess and talent at producing emotional beats. The artwork is not superb, but it is adequate, and particularly effective in emphasizing emotions through body posture (especially the hunched-over, arms hung limply mode of dejection). There is some great comedic timing also ("I'm a shark!"). My then-8-year-old daughter read it before I did, more than once, and thought it was terrific.

Nimona started great with the comedic aspect and villainous viewpoint. Blackheart and Goldenlion are the true leads of the book. I love how the author is teasing the relationship between the two characters but not acknowledging it since to cater to younger audiences.

The ending however is melodramatic (I love the evil dragon scene though haha)

Anyway if you want an easy read and fun to read book, I recommend Nimona.

Nimona - I love her. I actually laughed out loud throughout this graphic novel. I do hope more Nimona novels come someday, because what amazing characters!

What starts out as a seemingly light-hearted, witty camaraderie story about villains and sidekicks soon turns into a darker and more action-packed science-fantasy tale! This was a great comic filled with everything needed to keep things fresh and interesting. I loved the character dynamics and seeing everyone evolve and mature during the course of the story. The humor was great, and the adorable artwork was an absolute plus. This is one book I wish I could forget, just so I can experience it all over again. SPOILER: the ending might not wrap things up as tightly as some may want, but it is still a lovely ending in my opinion.

I don't normally read fantasy novels, so this one surprised me. I enjoyed the portrayal of the characters--especially Nimona, of course. She presents a challenge for Blackheart, who despite being a supervillain, is not as evil as he may seem. I enjoyed reading about the complicated relationship between Blackheart and Goldenloin and the way it progressed from childhood to adulthood. I recommend this book to everyone, especially those who enjoy fantasy.

This is the kind of book I'd want my kids to read.

Nimona is such a fun romp through a beautiful mash-up of science fiction and fantasy tropes. The fast pacing and distinct art style, as well as the moral ambiguity of most of the characters, makes this a unique offering for teen audiences. Nimona, the title character, is such an enthusiastic, complicated, powerful young lady creature. And her relationship with Ballister Blackheart, this world's Dr. Horrible, is endearing and nuanced and oh so heart-breaking. I had a few minor quibbles with the ending (and most of the choices there were likely made because this is a novel meant for younger audiences). Overall, if you're looking for a humorous adventure that gets surprisingly deep, don't skip out on this tome. It is a fab introduction to Stevenson's work.

This was a great graphic novel, even better that it was standalone which is rare. The story was easy to follow and kept me on my feet. The characters were lovable and I wanted to see where they were going next. Overall, this graphic novel would be appropriate for children, teens and adults.

I'm not a kid. I'M A SHARK!!

IndyPL_ShainaS Feb 18, 2019

You can't just go round murdering people. There are rules, Nimona.

Laura_X Jul 27, 2015

What do you mean there are rules? Why would you follow the rules? Isn't that the whole point of being a villain? That you don't follow the rules?

Blackheart: I can't have some kid following me around all day.
Nimona: I'm not a kid.
Nimona: I'm a SHARK!
