"Hocus Pocus is beloved by Halloween enthusiasts all over the world. Diving once more into the world of witches, this electrifying two-part young adult novel, released on the twenty-fifth anniversary of the 1993 film, marks a new era of Hocus Pocus. Fans will be spellbound by a fresh retelling of the original film, followed by the all-new sequel that continues the story with the next generation of Salem teens. Shortly after moving from California to Salem, Massachusetts, Max Dennison finds himself in hot water when he accidentally releases a coven of witches, the Sanderson sisters, from the afterlife. Max, his sister, and his new friends (human and otherwise) must find a way to stop the witches from carrying out their evil plan and remaining on earth to torment Salem for all eternity. Twenty-five years later, Max and Allison's seventeen-year-old daughter, Poppy, finds herself face-to-face with the Sanderson sisters in all their sinister glory. When Halloween celebrations don't quite go as planned, it's a race against time as Poppy and her friends fight to save her family and all of Salem from the witches' latest death-defying scheme." -- Amazon.

I love the movie So of course I'd loved the book. The first part of if was the movie, leaving some out and adding some. But the second part was the blast into the future I was waiting for. To see the kids get into the same mess, madness and trouble with the Sanderson sister as their parents did was exciting to read.

You just can't beat the original. The sequel earns an upbeat but noncommittal "meh"

Creating sequels is hard. Creating a sequel to a story-line that has since become a holiday staple for thousands of Disney fans, young and old, is infinitely harder. The All-New Sequel written in this book didn't ever really stand a good chance of holding up to 25 years of frenzied anticipation.

To be fair, the writer was very aware of all the fun jokes from the original and has respect for the props (Allison's awesome red jacket that I have personally wanted since I was twelve has actually been handed down from mother to daughter).

Unfortunately, the plot just isn't quite as developed as could be hoped for after 25 years. New rules for magic are thrown in somewhat arbitrarily so that stakes can be set for this new adventure and many, many, many new characters are thrown in that don't all get the same amount of time to develop.

Younger fans might want to jump into this adventure with both good magic and bad magic but older fans will want to prepare themselves as this is not the same old Hocus Pocus.

Recommended for the younger Disney fans who loved Wizards of Waverly Place and Disney's Descendants series.
