This movie was exceptional in its portrayal of what happens to a family when the father decides to leave. There were moments that I thought would break the mother (and who of us haven't been there when we just can't seem to find an end to our struggles), but it was her courage, conviction and constancy that redeemed her and her children in the very end.
Don't ever look down on someone who has less than you and makes a living in a way you may frown upon. A must see for all of us.

Rarely do Americans get a story of the hardships of those “illegals” who find themselves struggling to make a living for their children. This is one of those stories and should be an eye-opener for those who are open-minded but currently think all of these people are lazy and ignorant and should “self-deport.” Those who are predisposed to be suspicious of these ‘illegals” will cast such stories aside as nonsense.

At the heart of this movie is an inspiring real life story of an immigrant woman's struggle to survive in this country, having been abandoned by her husband only 2 weeks after moving from Colombia, not speaking any English, not knowing the system, and having very little money to go on. Having to care for 2 young children as well, she has no time to brood over her heartbreak. She simply takes it bit by bit, day by day, one piece meal work at a time, to get by. The fact that the young girl in the movie grew up to be a filmmaker who made this film adds a nice bookend to this immigrant story. So even though at the entertainment level the movie is rather slow and at times boring, this is well worth watching.
