"Over the past decade, there have been a series of internet-linked attacks on American interests, including North Korea's retaliatory hack of Sony Pictures, China's large-scale industrial espionage, Russia's 2016 propaganda campaign, and quite a lot more. The cyber war is upon us. Former Assistant Attorney General John Carlin has been on the frontlines of America's ongoing cyber war with its enemies. In this dramatic book, he tells the story of his years-long secret battle to keep America safe, and warns us of the perils that await us as we embrace the latest digital novelties -- smart appliances, artificial intelligence, self-driving cars -- with little regard for how our enemies might compromise them. The potential targets for our enemies are multiplying: our electrical grid, our companies, our information sources, our satellites. As each sector of the economy goes digital, a new vulnerability is exposed. The Internet of Broken Things is not merely a cautionary tale, though. It makes the urgent case that we need to start innovating more responsibly. As a fleet of web-connected cars and pacemakers rolls off the assembly lines, the potential for danger is overwhelming. We must see and correct these flaws before our enemies exploit them."--Procisws by publisher.

First, HTML is NOT a programming language - - clearly indicating the authors' lack of technical depth! [It is incorrectly classified as such in this book.]
I gave this book five stars as it contains much important information [while conveniently excluding much more important information] not because I have confidence in the authors [I don't!], but it is important to understand Unit 61398, China's Third Department, Chi Mak and his family, Chinese H1-B spies, et cetera, et cetera.
The authors mention several very interesting items in passing, but never connect any dots - - to be expected of Aspen Institute personnel, one of whom worked for Robert Mueller at the FBI.
[1] The director of the DIA, Lt.Gen. Patrick Hughes, is quoted on the subject of surprise attacks, and explains how surprise attacks really are seldom a surprise and are few and infrequent in number. Of course, the authors don't mention, perhaps ignorant of, the intrepid DIA analyst, Julie Sirrs, who went on a fearless fact-finding mission to Pakistan and Afghanistan in the late 1990s, amassing valuable data while observing al Qaeda training camps and upon returning presented that data to the DIA, warning of an impending terrorist attack on US soil - - to which DIA Director Gen. Hughes fired Ms. Sirrs!
[2] The authors mention that the US Secret Service office in NYC, located at the World Trade Center, had the capability of performing datataps [wiretaps on communications between computers and networks] - - the authors don't mention this office was in WTC Building 7, destroyed on 9/11 along with the Twin Towers. About a month after 9/11, the valuation of hedge funds assets doubled, from $2 trillion to $4 trillion.
Had that Secret Service office not been destroyed along with Building 7, it might have proven to be monitoring traffic among the investment firms' computer systems in the Twin Towers, which we know after the fact was where stock speculation occurred on 9/11-involved airlines and companies residing in the Twin Towers. Unfortunately, the destruction of the towers obscured the specific data, but we do know that the profits ended up in the account of investment firm of Alex. Brown and Sons, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bank.
An inactive partner at Alex. Brown was Buzz Krongard, then the executive director at the CIA - - Krongard's wife was a partner with Apollo Asset Management, which owned EurekaGGN, a fiber optics cabling firm which had just installed inactive - - or still dark - - fiber optics cabling in the top 20 stories or so of the WTC's Twin Towers.
Aboard Flight 77, was a physicist with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, who - - the year prior - - had been involved in a research project experimenting on the destruction of buildings by injecting nanothermite into fiber optic cabling, triggered by a single laser pulse [i.e., a stealth way of demolition and destruction]. ]. Unfortunately, he perished with the other passengers aboard Flight 77 when it crashed into the west wall of the Pentagon, killing almost all the members of the DIA's Financial Management Auditing team who had recently uncovered missing DoD funds amounting to $2.3 trillion, which had been publicly mentioned by the Pentagon's comptroller just days prior to 9/11/01.
Of course, this is simply a remarkable string of coincidences, as nobody would ever think to commit murder for a mere $2 trillion, after all . . . . .
