Reason to see this movie: Takashi Miike. Crazy good samurai movie. Top of the line Japanese sword movie. Think the movie Leon: The Professional with a young Natalie Portman but with much much amped up fighting.

This unremarkable samurai film falls flat fast and hard. I was not disturbed by the violence. In fact, I was bored enough to sleep through this hot mess. If you are attracted to regenerating samurais/or ronins, I highly recommend that you read the "Dororo" manga and watch the anime, and live-action film. It is so much better than this movie, which I turned off after 30 minutes of viewing. And if you like classic anime, I recommend that you watch "Ninja Scroll". Skip this movie entirely.

Good movie, but typical Japanese samurai bloodbath. Must be an older movie because the video quality was not too great.

I found this quite violent. I have watched several martial arts shows and one of the anime ones also was quite violent. This caused me to lose interest early on. I am not squeamish but I think this focuses more on gore than other martial arts movies like Ip Man, and Korean movies I've watched. Early on I also found it hostile even between "friendly" characters.

So while the movie played most of the time I was on my phone looking up things and reading online. Then I just took the movie out. It was too bloody to be worth watching.

Normally I pay attention to the shows I take out from the library. So maybe I'm missing something about the substance of this movie.

If you are into the Samurai genre to the likes of Kurosawa, and you appreciate the gore that is common place in Miike movies, then I think this one is for you. My main complaint is that the movie does run a little long, and some exposition is unnecessary. There are some Crouching Tiger moments in the movie, but they do not get in the way of the story. The movie was very well acted, the characters for the most part are interesting, and the action is far from disappointing. Pair this movie with 13 Assassins, and you will have an evening filled with a smorgasbord of Samurai-sword wielding carnage that will fill any gore-induced appetite.

For those who enjoy manga based samurai films as the blind swordsman “Zatoichi” series. The central theme was about the journey of Manji, an ageless skilled samurai, and Rin, a little girl whose family was murdered by an ambitious dojo master in Edo. In the course to help and protect Rin, there were an abundance of bloody sword fights between Manji (Takuya Kimura) and a multitude of opponents, from average bushi, specialist of scary looking weapons to a few legendary swordsmen. And if you don’t get enuff of the endless cutting and slashing, watch the extra features on how they created the opening and finale battles: “Manji vs. 100” and “Manji vs. 300.”

For a more conventional samurai film with Takuya Kimura, suggest to watch the excellent 2006 “Love and honor = 武士の一分 - Bushi no ichibun.”

Good fantasy samurai revenge movie. But it is very bloody and very violent.

I wanted to cut open my stomach like a samurai should... But if I did that, she'd be left to die in the dirt. It's hell. It's easier... When someone else decides life or death for you. Me... I've been alive for 800 years.
Rin! Can't you be more ladylike when you eat?
-I'm going as slow as I can.
Where did I go wrong? I'd hoped you would grow up graceful, ready to partake of all the joys of womanhood.
-Just write me off as a failure.
Girl... Hire a bodyguard. There is a man somewhere in edo who will never die. Find that man.
So who do I kill, then?
-Whoever... Is trying to kill me.
Fine with me. Itto-ryu or government, I couldn't care less. Anyone who goes after you.
Don't you guys believe in fighting one on one?
Bastards! You're nobodies right to the marrow of your bones.
