Marcus Vega is an endearing character who skillfully deals with a variety of issues (bullying, an absent dad, and a brother with Down syndrome) but it's the absent dad issue that takes up a lot of his thoughts. After a rare instance of losing his cool at school, his mother decides to take the boys for a trip - from Pennsylvania to Puerto Rico - where Marcus' delinquent dad still lives. The author provides a glimpse into daily life in Puerto Rico while the family is briefly reunited with the Vega relatives. The dad, though, remains elusive until at last Marcus finds him, where their meeting brings closure for Marcus. An enjoyable read for ages 10-14.

Marcus is a kiddo who is both kind and funny and it's a fun ride to watch his world grow bigger even as he becomes more firmly rooted in his own home.

FINALLY !! A YA title that is not about zombies, gangs, street life, suicide or other grim topics. Pick this book up and have a laugh. Life is a journey.
