When did PG rated films start containing nudity? Sad that film makers think we are too stupid to watch a movie where people don't use filthy language and actually keep their clothes on.

I had watched this movie years ago, but great story about Queen Victoria who was devastated by the death of her husband and she went into mourning for years. She basically withdrew from the public and at one point in the film, parliament debates whether to get rid of the monarchy. They recruit John Brown who worked at the Balmoral castle in Scotland, taking care of the horses and grounds and a favorite of Prince Albert's (the Queen's husband) to get the Queen out and about. Brown was a highlander Scot and he makes waves in the proper royal household. Brown and the Queen eventually become close, dear friends, and she slowly comes out of her mourning and back to life. Judi Dench is always outstanding and Billy Connolly as Brown is very good (he is a well known comedian). I thought Gerard Butler was in it (he is - I didn't recognize him!) he plays Brown's younger brother Archie. The story isn't really action packed, but is interesting because it portrays the monarchy as more than just some fancy job - balancing a personal life with a professional duty can be a huge burden. The scenery in Scotland is beautiful!

Ok I finally found a way to turn off the subtitles and did watch this. It was very good. Of course Judi Dench is almost always good.

I rented this as I had recently watched Young Victoria. I was expecting a bit more to the story than what was delivered. Just ok.

The cast in the film is excellent with Dench as Queen Victoria, Billy Connolly as John Brown, and Anthony Sher as Benjamin Disraeli. But it's a story that doesn't engender much sympathy or compassion. Although she was portrayed very well by Dench, Queen Victoria in the film comes across as a disgustingly self-centered and pompously arrogant woman, a person who relishes being waited upon, bowed or curtsied to, and generally indulged at every step of the way. I thought it also interesting that Brown, who at the outset is an admirable and seemingly honest individual, quickly becomes seduced by the atmosphere of dictatorial arrogance and himself becomes just like those in the royal household staff he initially abhorred. The only character that proved enjoyable was Benjamin Disraeli who evidenced some degree of complexity of character with his common sense and political expertise.

This film gives us a glimpse of what it may have been like for Queen Victoria after the death of her husband. Judi Dench and Billy Connolly were both great, but I found the plot lacking.

Dame Judy Dench is as stunning as usual in her acting. The scenery of Scotland as well as the Scottish music is lovely.
