"The five stories [in this collection first published in 1872] are purported to be cases by Dr. Hesselius, a 'metaphysical' doctor, who is willing to consider the ghosts both as real and as hallucinatory obsessions. The reader's doubtful anxiety mimics that of the protagonist, and each story thus creates that atmosphere of mystery which is the supernatural experience"

I was surprised at the 'clunky-ness' of the writing. These stories have atmosphere and mystery but due to the style are a slog.
I read the final story years ago and now remember that it was hard but that I was a teen and story/subject was more important than what kind of read it actually was.
Perhaps Le Fanu's time is past, or maybe mine has.
