1) Trout Fishing builds an imaginative world of words from a loosely connected series of prose poems. It's something of an international cult classic and is well worth reading. This one is worth 5 stars. 2) The Pill Versus is a collection of short casual poems or scraps of usually small thoughts. 3) In Watermelon Sugar is the weakest but probably no worse than many well regarded books out there. Most of the criticism applied to Brautigan, i.e. that it is naive, applies to this one with few of the redeeming virtues of his writing, but it is very quickly read.--------------------I haven't read Brautigan in decades and intend to keep reading. I doubt anyone would find this particularly countercultural nowadays, but he is a good solid writer who deserves revival.

A collection of the "god of the counterculture" and the "last of the Beats" (not my phrases) that includes two short novels and a collection of poems. Novel seems inaccurate to describe these strange, idiosyncratic and playful books. The poem collection features his best know poem "All Watched Over By Loving Grace." Like Bukowski (but less dirty), the poems feel of the moment and tossed off, but in a good way.
