Thomas Fool is an Information Man, an investigator tasked with cataloging and filing reports on the endless stream of violence and brutality that flows through Hell. His job holds no reward or satisfaction, because Hell has rules but no justice. Each new crime is stamped "Do Not Investigate" and dutifully filed away in the depths of the Bureaucracy. But when an important political delegation arrives and a human is found murdered in a horrific manner--extravagant even by Hell's standards--everything changes. The murders escalate, and their severity points to the kind of killer not seen for many generations. Something is challenging the rules and order of Hell, so the Bureaucracy sends Fool to identify and track down the killer.

Proving once again that the hard-boiled mystery concept can be applied to almost any setting, this book is set in hell where Information Man Thomas Fool is ordered to investigate a brutal murder. That he is ordered to investigate is almost as shocking to Fool as the crime itself since this is hell after all and demons kill humans all the time. Great plot, imaginative setting and interesting characters make this a definite recommendation.

I am not going to rate this book because I did not finish it. The premise is fantastic and the writing is excellent. I just found it too grim to continue. The setting is Hell after all so I'm not surprised by the dark and hopeless tone. Our hero is aptly named Thomas Fool. I'll check the book out again in the future and give it a try once again.

Indeed an original concept as GAI1776 says. Hell has changed over the years; no longer lakes of fire, brimstone and all that Old Testament hell. It seems to me to be almost like North Korea, where people work in terrible factories(labor camps in No. Korea) and are tormented by demons. But hell needs cops it seems. It's very different, I thought it was scary at times(descriptions of demons and torments afflicted). Very different crime/detective novel. Read it!
