The young and handsome Kanō Sōzaburō (加納惣三郎) is admitted to the Shinsengumi (新撰組), an elite samurai police group led by Kondō Isamu (近藤勇) that seeks to defend the shogunate against reformist forces.
Although Kanō is 18 yeras old, he is a quite skilled swordsman, but his feminine appearance creats tension within the all-male group and attracts both buddies and superiors, who are vying for Kanō's affections.
Some homosexual love-triangle situations take place among the members, and a couple of members are killed.
Captain Okita Sōji (沖田総司) and Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshizō (土方歳三)---played by Takeshi Kitano---try to find out who killed those members.
In due course, Captain Okita tells Hijikata about the classic homosexual love-story from the Ugetsu Monogatari (雨月物語)---literaly, "rain and moon stories" written by Ueda Akinari (上田秋成: 1734-1809).
It is the nitty-gritty of the Japanese homosexual love-story.
The vice-commander is impressed by the story and asks Captian Okita, "Are you love in Kanō by any chance?"
"On, no ... I'm not that type of guy. You know that darn well, don't you?"
It is unfortunate that the director didn't visualize the story and he simply makes Okita tell it.
At the end Vice-Commander Hijikata Toshizō comes to realize that Kanō really loves Captain Okita.
