Three beautiful French sisters entrust an American hiker with the mission of rescuing their mother, Calliope, who is hiding high in the Alps. The mountains are filled with beauty and danger, not the least of which is Calliope's desire to stay hidden. And all the while, the hiker finds himself haunted by the memory of her daughters and conflicted in his desire for them.

I felt like I was reading a modern interpretation of The Odyssey. Jim Olsen was Odysseus while Calliope Castallane was Calypso with barn owls as the sirens. Jim is in the French Alps taking a hiking holiday when he is approached by three young women who want him to bring their mother home to Paris. Seizing (or entranced into) this opportunity, Jim leaves his friend Ambrose to search for Calliope. Many adventures, most against the Alpine elements, ensue before Jim finally brings Calliope to her husband's trackers. This short novel would make an excellent movie with its Alpine setting, varied characters, and many tests during the journey.
