I had been wanting to see this primarily because of who's in it: Brando, Ringo, Matthau, Coburn, John Astin, John Huston (Richard Burton, whom I consider a pompous inflated gasbag regardless of his many laurels). Brando was funny -- I'll give it that.
It fell flat on its face unfortunately, as its screenwriter, the talented Buck Henry, sadly attests to in the bonus features.
Firstly, for me, it did so because of the era, the late '60s. Steppenwolf and their dated, distorted fuzz guitar doesn't work for me in a film soundtrack. Nor does the trippy LSD influenced camera work. I find it irritating.
Secondly, and most importantly -- its pathetic premise.
It's beyond me how 1968 society or the filmmakers find ANY entertainment, comedic, for God's sake, or otherwise, in the nonstop sexual abuse and rape (incestuous, too, no less!) of a naïve, drop-dead-gorgeous Swedish Barbie by just about EVERY man she encounters. She is ridiculously scripted throughout to meekly and half-heartedly struggle with her onslaught of attackers for a brief moment before succumbing (shocker). And then everything's "groovy".
The film is a two hour penile pursuit that, understandably for me, now, has rightfully faded into obscurity.
