As with all of this author’s books, I love the great effort she puts into her research whether it be Sydney’s detailed suburban geography, the idiosyncrasies of cello acoustics or the unpredictable explosiveness of a Meditation Retreat. It threads so much substance and credibility into her work.

I have become a true fan of Liane Moriarty's work. She develops rich characters in relatable settings. Then she will go and develop rich characters in madcap settings and still somehow make them relatable. In Truly Madly Guilty, she strings out her story to us snippets of "before", "after" and "during" a devastating family event, and not necessarily in that order. The story is about friendships, family, marriage, young children, and the trappings and gifts that each gives. Well done, Ms. Moriarty. Can't wait for the next book!

Found the book to be very similar in format to Big Little Lies which I had just read. In both, you are well into the book before you find out what the main event is that drives the first half which is okay. The book is also about young parents in middle class Sydney suburbs. 5f this is how all of Liane Moriarty books are styled, I would hesitate before reading another. I also found the ending a bit disappointing. Would I recommend? If you haven't read one of her books before, probably yes.

I'm a little shocked to see so many mediocre reviews here!

If you're looking for a fast-paced thriller, this is definitely not your book. But if you enjoy clever character development and an honest exploration of the complexity of friendships and family relationships, definitely give this a read.

As a bonus, the dialogue and unflinchingly honest portrayal of what REALLY goes on in our heads had me laughing out loud every few pages!

I had read one of her other books and couldn't put it down. When I picked this one up, I was wondering what I had seen in this author. I think the shallowness of the characters really turned me off. I finished it and she redeemed herself a bit in the end, but this is not one of her best writings.

I had to stop reading this latest book by Liane Moriarty after only 35 pages. The author uses the same old plot device that she has used successfully in the past. It was a novel approach in her earlier books like "The Husband's Secret." It was tantalizing and drew the reader in. Now, however, this reader just wanted to shout, "Get on with it! Stop teasing. Just tell the story." NC

2.75. I knew this was not my genre when I got it from the library but it was chosen by a book club I recently joined. It was incredibly slow. 200 pages in, you still do not know what happened at the barbecue. I understood the characters but none of them resonated with me. Moreover, it is disappointing to contemplate a neighbourhood filled with vapid, selfish people like "best friends" who resent and dislike each other. This fell flat enough for me that it was my first and last book by Liane Moriarty.

Another story about bad things happening to little kids because the parents are too wrapped up in themselves to surpervise them properly.

I loved What Alice Forgot, so enthusiastically dove into this book. I'm now on chapter 42 and am still waiting for the big reveal alluded to at the very beginning -- WAAAAYYYYY too long. It actually feels manipulative of the author to drag it out to these lengths. And I almost don't care any more.

Just an ordinary day at an ordinary barbecue, what could possibly go wrong? That is exactly what couples Oliver and Erika, Sam and Clementine contemplate as they accept a last minute barbecue invitation from Erika and Oliver’s exuberant neighbours Vid and Tiffany.  Fast forward two months later and Sam, Clementine, Erika and Oliver keep asking themselves “What if we hadn’t gone?”

Clementine and Erika are childhood best friends with a complicated relationship whose lives and personalities couldn’t be more different. Clementine is a cellist is married to Sam, with two adorable young daughters, a chaotic life and an “anything goes” attitude toward parenting. Erika alternatively is married to Oliver, who both are accountants with type-A personalities, fraught childhoods, and are childless. Neighbours to Erika and Oliver, Vid is someone who enjoys all that life has to offer and with his "smoking hot" wife Tiffany, loves to host gatherings in their home in Sydney. None of them, especially Vid expected their lives to change the night of the barbecue and expose secrets that had been carefully tucked away.

In her new novel Truly Madly Guilty, Moriarty examines the foundation and strengths of relationships, marriages and parenthood. She writes a fast paced novel that will keep you wondering what happened the night of the barbecue to affect the lives of all who attended. This is a great read for the beach as well as for readers who enjoy solving mysteries through various point of views and timelines.

(Erika) I didn't want you to know that my best friend feels that way about me" …
(Hubby replies) I'm your best friend, Erika, don't you know that?
