In Sleepless Nights a woman looks back on her life|the parade of people, the shifting background of place|and assembles a scrapbook of memories, reflections, portraits, letters, wishes, and dreams. An inspired fusion of fact and invention, this beautifully realized, hard-bitten, lyrical book is not only Elizabeth Hardwick's finest fiction but one of the outstanding contributions to American literature of the last fifty years.

At first, this reads like poetry. The language is exquisite and the tone is like the best professor/friend/confidante you've ever heard, with editing.

But then I got tired of reading about husbands and wives, of marriages gone sideways, of people not being interesting, not really. If I wanted to read about dirty laundry in kind of hushed tones, kind of in an oversharing way, kind of unpleasant without the insight, I'd listen closer to my family at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Nobody ever lets anyone complete a thought there, either.

Maybe it's just me. I forced myself to read the whole book and now I kind of don't feel so good.

Idiosyncratic, original, and autobiographical novel By Elizabeth Hardwick that blithely jumps around in time and geography. Hardwick had a tumultuous marriage to the poet Robert Lowell.

"An extraordinary and haunting book." Joan Didion

Reminded me of a very compact Ove Knausgaard work.
