In a secluded valley in Iceland, Gummi and Kiddi live side by side, tending to their sheep. Their ancestral sheep-stock is considered one of the country's best and the two brothers are repeatedly awarded for their prized rams who carry an ancient lineage. Although they share the land and a way of life, Gummi and Kiddi have not spoken to each other in four decades. When a lethal disease suddenly infects Kiddi's sheep, the entire valley comes under threat.

The shifts in tone -- from deadpan comedy to deadpan tragedy -- may be puzzling, but this story of two brothers butting heads is worth checking out for fans of small films. I'm not sure why, as the author/director says, it took three years to write the simple script. However, it's understandable the film itself took five years to make. They had all those sheep to cast.

Icelandic tragi-comedy. pride, jealously, revenge, secrecy, dark humour, salvation

We really enjoyed this film. The scenery was beautiful. The story of the two brothers was affecting. You really felt for the protagonist, his love for the land, his animals and his place in the community. Even when his actions were irrational, it was easy to empathize with him.

Not my usual type of film, but the cinematography and cultural aspects were superb. Dark subject, but the understated humour was very enjoyable. I howled over the unorthodox ambulance ride.

Typically droll Icelandic humour permeates every frame of this delightful Scandinavian take on the Cain vs Abel myth which will have you alternately laughing and cringing right up to the unexpectedly poignant final frame.

Looooooved this movie!

This is the kind of movie that will make you feel wonderful if you could not attend the Vancouver Film Festival.

What a cultural, realistic, humane, and beautiful gem!

The photography is out of this world!
