A tough-talking former cop, private investigator Kinsey Millhone has set up a modest detective agency in a quiet corner of Santa Teresa, California. A twice-divorced loner with few personal possessions and fewer personal attachments, she's got a soft spot for underdogs and lost causes. Eight years ago, Nikki Fife was convicted of killing her philandering husband. Now she's out on parole and needs Kinsey's help to find the real killer. If there's one thing that makes Kinsey feel alive, it's playing on the edge. When her investigation turns up a second corpse, more suspects, and a new reason to kill, Kinsey discovers that the edge is closer--and sharper--than she imagined.

The first book in the series of the life of Kinsey Millhone, private investigator. I like the book, read easy and quickly. Private investigators do not have the excitement as police officers so it was expected that there would not be much going on but the mystery of the investigation and actually "who done it". The twists and turns were good and kept me interested enough to know I really needed to get to the end to find out who did it. I was hoping there would be some reaction written in about how Nikki took the news considering she spent eight years in prison. Would you ever have closure? How would you feel? Maybe there will be something in the "B" book. All in all, I will continue reading the series in between my other reads. I really like a good mystery.

The first book in a long and famous series by this author. The only turnoff for me in her writing style is her love of description over plot movement. Every scene is set with rather detailed descriptions that do not add to the action and will turn some readers off.

A good read. Will be reading more from her.

I was surprised to find the start of this long-running series to be so dull. The writing was uninspiring and the detecting was terrible. (Kinsey didn't want anyone to know she was in Vegas, so she wiped her hotel room clean of fingerprints... and then paid with a credit card? Really?) I will not be continuing with the series.

Sue's first, back when she was still young and bitter. By the time you get to "K," she loses her zany humorous edge, and her books become more serious, less enjoyable, still you feel compelled to finish, and now we are on "W"...or is it "X"...

Beware, this series is addictive.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. There are a few interesting twists and turns that Kinsey has to face in discovering the real murderer of an unpleasant lawyer. I am looking forward to the rest of the series.

This was a decent distraction from work and deadlines for a few hours. Kind of a run-of-the-mill mystery/thriller.

Very entertaining. I plan to read other books in the series.
