A show that is smarter and funnier that it appears on the surface. It embraces the ridiculousness of the plot, at times pushing it to soap opera/"telenovela"-type twists and turns. Ultimately the acting is well-done and the show is enjoyable, if a little fast-paced and superficial-seeming at times. Give it a try if you like funny, quirky shows.

a perfect tv show! funny, smart, heartwarming, just the right amount of self-aware melodrama.

So… Jane The Virgin. I had a true love/hate relationship with this show. I wouldn’t say that it was as strong as love and hate, but more like like/dislike. I’ll start off by saying what I liked about the show. Gina Rodriguez played the character of Jane wonderfully! I mean, she really embodied her. Another thing that I liked was that the show had a narrator. You don’t get to see that very commonly and it really added some interesting moment to the show. I also liked the basic plotline of the show. A virgin who gets accidentally artificially inseminated? Who wouldn’t like it?! But now onto the things that I disliked. For one, Xiomara. I know that many loved her rowdy and outspoken nature, but I just felt like she was an unneeded character and really annoyed me to my core. Another thing I disliked: Michael and Jane’s split. It was truly heartbreaking. And I realise that Jane was angry at Michael, but come on! He was the one that had to adjust to her new lifestyle. Overall, the show is a 3/5 for me. I would recommend it to someone, but I definitely wouldn’t push them to watch it. @thesoundofcolour of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Jane the Virgin is a great show. It follows Jane Villanueva, a young Latina woman that was saving her virginity until she got married who accidentally gets artificially inseminated. The show is loosely based off a Venezuelan telenovela named, Juana la Virgen. I love that it pokes fun at Latin telenovelas while still being relatable to other audiences. There’s a lot of real issues that have been brought up on the show, with a lot of crazy storylines you would only see on a telenovela or soap opera. While still being funny, the show can be heartbreaking. You’ll laugh for a second and cry the next. The show also does a great job at representing Latinx people. Gina Rodriguez does an amazing job as Jane. I could not see anyone else doing it better than she is. I recommend everyone to watch this show!

Jane The Virgin is the type of show that you either love or hate. Personally, I lean more towards the side of hatred because I found the show to be - for the most part - fairly boring. If you have a love for quirky personal shows that are relatable and pure, then I understand why you may like it. Myself being someone that is more so interested in plot and character development, I found the emphasis on quirkiness, randomness, and innocence to be rather boring and forced. A lot of the characters don't go into a lot of depth, and are more so there just so that everyone has someone that they can relate to. I can see why so many people enjoy the show because there is in fact something for everyone; however, the story line and sophistication of the production is seriously lacking. Overall, I recommend watching the show for yourself on DVD so that you can decide whether you hate it, or love it.

A very witty and funny show. The characters are likable and the storylines are very good because there are a lot of clever plot twists to keep things interesting. I liked Season 1 very much, I look forward to watching Season 2.

I love this show. It pokes fun at Mexican soap operas while making you fall in love with the characters. The "narrator" kept me laughing.

This show emulates the style of a Spanish telenovela, but boosts it a touch to become a bit of a parody of the genre. What a great idea. The writers are witty and clever for this show and the acting is top-notch. It has all the melodramatic twists of a soap opera while also trying to stay grounded in reality. The characters are not all ridiculously wealthy; the titular Jane is working-class, which helps the audience to navigate their way through some of the ridiculousness of it all. But that's all part of the fun. And with some real-life issues thrown into the mix to complement the silly romantic dream sequences (you know, that old nugget), you end up with a show that winks and nudges you, a very tongue-in-cheek playfulness. As mentioned by other commenters, the voice-over narrator is hilarious, too, adding another dimension to the fairy tale. It defies all comprehension, but JANE THE VIRGIN somehow works. This fast-paced comedy left me wanting more. I can't wait for the second season and highly recommend the first.
