Fifteen-year-old Lizzie Vogel takes a job as an "auxiliary nurse" at Paradise Lodge, a home for the elderly, and learns that her job entails helping the patients (frequently) to the bathroom. What begins as a way to avoid school and earn some spending money (for the finer things in life, like real coffee and beer shampoo) quickly becomes the education of a lifetime as Lizzy wades through the day-to-day humdrum and drama of this ramshackle refuge for the elderly. And when a rival nursing home threatens, Lizzie discovers that the staff and residents of Paradise Lodge have become her surrogate family, and the only place she's ever felt she belongs --

A rather odd coming of age story for 15 year old Lizzie. It's a toss between focusing on school or stepping out in the world according to the Paradise Lodge with its unusual elderly. On taking an emergency call from Nurse Hilary: "It had been strange being phoned at home and it not being one of my friends saying they hated their dad's guts or did I want to go into town for chips.... It was a coming-of -age call. I stood in the hall and pondered on that for a while and then had to run for the school bus." The plot did not thicken if there was a clear one. The story did come together neatly at the end. English charm plus odd-ball residents among crazy teens makes for a joy ride.
