I don't know what one can mean by "best novelists", but I have never been disappointed in Boyd. His books are always worth reading and have both excellent style and plotting. Sometimes the "best novelists' are a slog (like opera singers singing country and western if you know what I mean). I find the above comment a little condescending.

Boyd is one of my favorite writers. This is not among his very best novels but well worth reading and savoring. Happily, I just discovered it recently. (June, 2012)
