Another great novel by Guy Gavriel Kay. As in many of his works this is a fantasy novel with some minor magical elements, major religious conflict, with the religions totally invented but historically proxies for Islam and Christianity, and a solid base in a particular period of history. The larger historical themes of the book involve the commercial infighting between the trading empires of Dubrovnik and Venice, both them and the greater Islamic empire's trade being preyed upon by the Christian pirates of Senj, Islamic expansionism and internal dynastic politics, with a nod to the Croation hero Skanderberg.

There are several closely related storylines involving different protagonists and how they effect each other with the two major protagonists being powerful and self sufficient women. The novel is complete in itself although it is in the same general fantasy structure as the author's Sarantium series and The Lions of Al-Rassan.

"There were, he thought, so many ways a man could die."

This book sucked me in and I never wanted to leave. I am excited that there is a sequal!

As with all GGK books, I got completely immersed in the world and didn't want to leave it.
GGK creates a world that is both familiar and strange and we take the journey with characters we want to know more about.

I couldn't agree more with SPL robyn. This is a book to take your time with and savor the inner worlds of the characters as they experience the events of the time in the complex outer world, with just enough of the half-world to feel like it is not far from my own imagination.

GGK builds yet another world, using elements from Lions of Al Rassan and The Sarantine Mosaic. Give yourself time with this one and enjoy the journey.
