Melba Wilson grew up in Harlem but spent her summers in the Carolinas with extended family. Her recipes reflect both places in easy, accessible language. Most dishes have less than 8 ingredients which make me want to try them. A lengthy introduction shares Melba's life and hard-won wisdom with the reader and gives you context for her favorite foods. Her most famous dish, Chicken and Eggnog Waffles, was born of a rushed morning when her son wanted waffles for breakfast and she only had eggnog in the refrigerator. A happy accident that she later used to beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network. This book would be a nice gift for the less experienced cook. Who wouldn't love a cookbook that has its own chapter on fried chicken -- including baked and gluten-free?
