Well. I have to give this author credit for a post apocalyptic novel that's plausible: It doesn't involve zombies. It features a clean, crisp writing style similar to Cormac McCarthy in The Road, and similarly, we never quite learn what caused the environmental disaster in this novel. But sometimes I wonder about this weird American fixation with post apocalyptic fiction! Some confusion over the name of the principle characters: The dust jacket refers to them as the Chapmans, but they're the Gardners for the rest of the book.
