The Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier helps Rose by lending words of advice and support. I have read other of E. Maxwell's books and found them well written. This book was more difficult loaded as it was with "thees" and "thous". But to my great surprise and dismay, in a book about a Quaker, there is a comment about a lesbian couple and "isn't it nice that they found someone to love". Really? That is what an 1880"s Quaker would believe? And it's relevant to the storyline? Why does a book need to have the above comment in it? So now you can make an informed decision.

Delightful. Great heroine, with an accurate historical background. Want to learn more about Quakers, and enjoy a mystery? This is the book. I am anxiously awaiting the second in the Quaker Midwife series.

A quick and easy read. The main character Rose is smart , sensible and credible. The religious side ( the story takes place among a Quaker community) and the old fashion style add to the quaint atmosphere of this mystery.
Looking forward the next in the series.
