"The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver, Elaine Brown, Emory Douglas, Jamal Joseph, and many others, it|s an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America."--Container.

This documentary is absorbing and an interesting look into how the Black Panthers rose up and became a symbol- of hope to some and of danger to other- and was systematically stifled, crushed and assassinated until they no longer existed. The most interesting part is seeing how the Panthers was a counter culture movement that became political and how they were received by those in power. Because even though the Black Panthers were part of the civil rights movement they were counter to even the movement in the south led by of course Martin Luther King Jr.

Actually there was another feature-length documentary about the Black Panther Party that came out in 1996 by Lee Lew Lee called All Power To The People: The Black Panther Party and Beyond. It just didn't get the same backing and promotion. It never was released on DVD (only VHS), but it is available on youtube now.
