Read these in order and get addicted! In fact, please read these! Don't worry about the sweets on the cover or the chapters headed with cupcakes: this is not a sticky sweet story. I think these stories would be ideal for older teens as well as adults. (Strong woman determined to succeed by her own means on her own terms) Love is certainly a central feature--but not the heavy breathing gross graphic descriptions of sex where lust is passing as love. Polly continues to want to "go it alone" and make her own way. She turns down every free offer, and borrows from her partner only on the condition she will pay him back. She fights what seems to be a losing battle, and every step forward is washed away by people who just don't care about anything but their own greed.
Neil is still Polly's best (non-human) friend. New characters bring new stresses, old friends' lives are turned upside down, and Polly comes face-to-face with the wife of the man she slept with because she forgot to ask if her was married.
Not a three hanky book, but I admit I got teary a couple times. (Five delightful hours feeling like you are with friends and neighbors.)

This book was picked for me by my daughter because the cover was yummy, and I since I don't judge books by their cover I was not sure what to expect. I ended up enjoying the story quite a bit. I identified with the yearning for a slower pace of life and the fulfillment that can bring. Hipsters, foodies and Craft culture with echos of Wordsworth Pastoral romance

This sequel to Little Beach Street Bakery finds Polly's happy world set on its head overnight. The bakery space she was renting has a new owner after Mrs. Manse's death. Saddled with a barely payable mortgage for the old lighthouse, Polly is determined to stick it out with the new owner. Unfortunately, his ideas to cut costs shreds Polly's artisan heart to pieces. When Neil, her pet puffin, gets sick on the bakery floor in front of the new manager, Polly loses her job. When Polly goes into business with Nan the Van, her former boss sabotages her at every turn. Colgan, once again, has set up a series of misadventures for Polly and Huckle with a very satisfying resolution at the end of the book.

Fun story, being someone who loves to bake, and has moved to a small community, I can so relate for this story. I have book 3, Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery awaiting.

Ahhhh. Jenny Colgan. Bakery on an island. The plot thickens - will Polly be able to survive the new owner of the bakery - not an islander? Fishermen and cakes and the red van on wheels who is a character in its own right..... bliss!

I enjoyed reading this book, but I did enjoy "Little Beach Street Bakery" (the first book in this series) better. Definitely a good read, so I still recommend it.
