Dalya is from Berlin, Germany and she is Jewish (readers meet her in 1938). She and her family are sent to a concentration camp because of this. A few years later, Dalya makes her way to New York where life is promising, and eventually meets up with Aaron, Dalya's long-term friend from the past. Pinny and Ray in 2013 are in some ways friends and orphans. They live in Jaynis at a boarding school by the name of Smokebush. They run away and eventually meet Dalya, who is still living in New York many years later. All three characters are bonded by pale pink shoes...
