Best for readers already familiar with PKD. A mind-bending novel set in a dystopian world where global warming has made the majority of the earth uninhabitable, with humanity scattered about in off-world colonies. To help cope with the difficult setting is the popular use of the drug CAN-D, allowing escapism into an alternate reality shared with others while using accompanying doll-like toys and layouts. The plot revolves around the possible introduction of a new competing drug, Chew-Z, and the problems this causes. A compelling and disorienting story, with layers of reality and unreality. (This book is related to his earlier short-story, “The Days of Perky Pat” (1963).)
