I have enjoyed this film multiple times since seeing in an art house theatre back in the eighties. Visually stunning and love the plot.

This film was released in 1981 and it was rather cutting edge at the time – visually stylish, set in Paris about a young man (Jules) who loves opera and falls in love with an American opera diva – the lovely and talented Wilhelmina Wiggins Fernandez. She is classified as a diva because she refuses to be recorded or make records. Jules secretly records the diva singing La Wally by Catalani (it plays through out the film) and that tapes gets mixed up with another tape which involves police corruption and crime. Jules gets involved with the police corruption via the mixed up tape. Along the way he encounters the shoplifting Vietnamese girlfriend of the wave watching baguette zen artist. Two other men threaten to release the diva’s unknown recording of La Wally. So, all sorts of twists and turns set to lovely opera music. Visually and aurally lovely. Nice scenery of Paris. Not appropriate for children - some nudity and violence and swearing. In French if you want to practice yours, subtitled for the rest of us.

The glorious floating singing of Ms Fernandez melted my heart- my first experience of being able to love an operatic voice- make the whole film worth it.

This is one of my all time favourite films. I'd always suspected that Paris held a gritty underground just beneath the feet of the tourist culture, and this film shines a light on it. The combination of luscious Paris exteriors, an unexpected opera buff,. the haunting voice of Wilhelmenia Fernandez, the juxtaposition of the sweet and the ugly all make this film a real winner, and better yet, one that stands up to the test of time.

I tried to like this one but it was too boring to hold my interest.

Possibly the first foreign film I liked and saw more than once. Opera is not my thing, but I can appreciate the music!

Love story and odd characters I think caught my interest and later in life made me want to own it.

The listing of the performers omits the leading actress, Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez

This makes it more difficult to locate this film.

This is a real find. Opera + Detective.

creative and good chasing scenes.

Must see !

Even the interview of director (unlike other) is very worth watching.
